DESCRIPTION

The Division of Gastroenterology in the Department of Medicine conducts research on Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH) and Metabolic-dysfunction Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD) in patients. It participates in the Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis Clinical Research Network (NASHCRN), a multi-center study that focuses on the etiology, contributing factors, natural history, complications, and therapy of NASH and MASLD. UCSD is one of eight sites nationwide associated with this study which is sponsored by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK).

In addition, the MASLD Research Center participates in pharmaceutical clinical trials and Investigator initiated studies which focus on the discovery and validation of innovative biomarkers for MASLD, with a special focus on identifying those patients at greatest risk for nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), advanced liver fibrosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

The other areas of research include cirrhosis, obesity, diabetes and metabolic diseases.

Under general supervision, the incumbent will provide research support to the director of MASLD research center. Will act as a liaison for multiple research projects including research support to the principal investigator (PI) for GOLDMINE and other clinical studies.

The incumbent will also be responsible for integrating the research data for use in manuscript writing, annual reports to the funding agencies, research meetings such as conferences and seminars along with poster presentations. Review and abstract relevant data from case files and databases. Participate in the coordination and development of procedures for data collection and management. Independently perform necessary data acquisition, compilation, submission, and quality control. Assist with coordination and preparation of grant submissions using scientific knowledge including development of research strategy in conjunction with PI. Determine appropriate journal for manuscript submission. Ensure correct format for manuscript submission, review, edit and consolidate input from multiple authors.

Additionally, the incumbent will manage and provide high-level support to the Director of MASLD Research Center, as needed. Will also provide high level support to the director, as well as other PIs in the group as needed. Duties include coordinating meetings and creating agenda for meetings; coordinating travel for PIs; managing PIs' schedules, independently composing and proofing a high daily volume of correspondence while coordinating appropriate actions to resolve any issues that arise. Additional responsibilities include prepare technical materials and information for meetings, conferences and events. Provide academic support including, but not limited to, updating CV, UCSD Bio Bibliography, NIH biosketches, submissions for publication, updating listings of grants, bibliography updates for programs in EndNote, as well as support the processing of visas for international staff and visitors. Other duties assigned as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Theoretical knowledge in a science field as typically attained through a Bachelor's degree, or an equivalent combination of education and laboratory experience.

  • Solid organizational skills and ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes. Demonstrated advanced organizational, project management, and time management skills including the ability to determine appropriate priorities, complete projects accurately, efficiently, and with a high level of attention to detail, despite frequent interruption, and competing deadlines and changing priorities.

  • Demonstrated strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to analyze, formulate solutions, and resolve problems in the absence of higher authorities while maintaining professional relationships.

  • Demonstrated skill in analyzing and interpreting broad policies and regulations as they pertain to the department; skilled in assessing impact of policy decision on department, suggesting options for implementation and advising staff.

  • Experience with administration and management, complex scheduling, international and domestic travel arrangements, and long-range planning.

  • Ability to use sound judgment in responding to issues and concerns. Solid communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff verbally and in writing.

  • Working knowledge of common organization-specific and other computer application programs. Proficient in research and multiple computer skills and software programs (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, electronic mail, automated calendaring systems) and programs such as internet browser applications. Strong demonstrated working knowledge of reference software packages such as EndNote. Experience to conduct searches on the internet and use library information systems such as pub med and other literature searches. Experience using computer spreadsheets and database applications for report generation.

  • Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality.

  • Knowledge of medical and scientific terminology.

  • Very good to excellent scientific writing skills.

  • Ability to work as a team member and independently.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Two (2) or more years of demonstrated experience supporting and managing a lab.

  • Knowledge and understanding of University and departmental policies and procedures (e.g., prepare travel, reimbursement and entertainment forms with the knowledge of UCSD policies and procedures as they relate to travel and campus services) and working knowledge of University-wide and UCSD organizations and structures.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must be available to work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings when required.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $58,548 - $94,190 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $28.04 - $45.11

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
