INSTRUCTOR/ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF MATHEMATICS

EXPECTATIONS AND NATURE OF THE POSITION

The primary responsibility of this individual is to provide quality instruction to WWCC students enrolled in classes taught at the main campus in Rock Springs, Green River Center, and other local facilities as assigned. Teaching a course over a distance education medium, such as the Internet is also a common expectation. This individual must be able to relate to a wide variety of students in the community college environment. This individual’s primary responsibilities may include teaching courses in Mathematics such as: developmental mathematics, College Algebra, Trigonometry, and Calculus.

Typical load is 4 courses per semester with an average class size of 25. Teaching load range is from 28 to 32 credit hours for an academic year.

It is expected that this individual will accomplish assigned duties in an efficient, effective and competent manner, and strive for improvement and excellence in all work performed. Additionally, this individual must understand the comprehensive role of the community college and cooperate and work harmoniously with college personnel and the public. This individual must follow all college policies, rules, regulations and guidelines as they relate to this position.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES FOR WHICH THIS INDIVIDUAL IS ACCOUNTABLE

  • Provides quality instruction to students in assigned courses including, but not limited to, developmental mathematics, College Algebra, Trigonometry and Calculus.

  • States clear objectives and criteria in each course syllabus; follows the Curriculum Committee's guidelines regarding course syllabi. Evaluates students’ performance in light of these objectives and criteria.

  • Teaches courses in a variety of environments and modes including online and evening offerings.

  • Advises students clearly and effectively; learns the requirements for WWCC graduation and transfer to other colleges and universities. Updates the advising information related to his/her curricula at the University of Wyoming and other colleges and universities.

  • Works with the Mathematics Department to recommend course schedules to the Division Chair; prepares and updates course syllabus; recommends new courses as needed.

  • Designs and implements effective learning processes for students; provides feedback on student improvement in attaining the WWCC Goals for Student Success.

  • Maintains a reasonable schedule of office hours.

  • Develops effective working relationships with colleagues.

Other Related Duties

  • Works with the Division Chair to develop an individual professional development plan that will be of mutual benefit to the individual and to WWCC. Develops and submits annual goals and accomplishments. Completes all elements of Faculty Evaluation Plan.

  • Participates in the Departmental, Divisional and Institutional activities as requested.

  • Commits to on-going professional development.

  • Mentors colleagues to assure effective instruction and professional development.

  • Assists in the recruitment and retention of WWCC students.

  • Refers students to appropriate College resources.

  • Communicates clearly and effectively using the college network system, including e-mail, calendar, and learning management system; integrates learning with technology.

  • Mentors adjunct faculty to maintain quality instruction consistent with the expectations and standards of the full-time faculty, the division chair, Dean of Academics, and the Vice President of Student Learning; interacts with adjuncts assigned by the chair; reviews applications of adjunct faculty.

  • Becomes familiar with the budgeting process of the college; assists with preparing annual and biennial budgets.

  • Maintains an inventory of all assigned equipment and supplies in the office and other assigned areas; takes prudent efforts to safeguard WWCC physical resources from unauthorized use; maintains safe working conditions and practices.

  • Becomes familiar with and participates in the College’s effort for planning and improvement.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university with a Master’s Degree in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or Mathematics Education with a minimum of 18 graduate hours of pure mathematics as determined by the Department of Mathematics at WWCC.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the concepts, technologies, principles and practices of mathematics.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff and administrators.

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in all facets of the student-teacher relationship and to teach a diverse group of community college students.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.

Equivalency Statement
For those who do not exactly meet all the minimum qualifications, an equivalent combination of education and experience, which has provided comparable knowledge and abilities, may be acceptable.

PREFERRED ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ph.D. in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or Mathematics Education with a minimum of 18 graduate hours of pure mathematics as determined by the Department of Mathematics at WWCC.

  • Teaching experience at the college level substantiated by excellent student evaluations and/or letters of recommendations.

  • Experience with active approaches to learning; experience using alternative methods of learning, such as interactive software, Internet, or individualized modular programs.

  • Active participation in relevant professional organizations. Evidence of continued professional development.

  • Demonstrated teaching excellence at a community college.

  • Prolonged and frequent sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, and stooping.

  • Moderate to heavy usage of hands in grasping, repetitive hand movement and finger coordination in keeping records and preparing reports using a computer keyboard.

  • Speech and hearing to communicate effectively in group setting and by telephone to students, faculty, staff, and others.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee regularly works in classroom and/or lab conditions occasionally; may provide training at an employer’s work site. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate. Employees may be required to travel.
