POSITION SUMMARY:

The Seattle Central College Parent Education Program has an ongoing application process so we can create a part-time hiring pool to fill openings when they arise. Instruction may be provided to parent cooperative preschools, the Parent/Child Center located at Seattle Vocational Institute, local elementary schools, homeless & transitional housing programs, and child care programs throughout the central Seattle area. There may also be classes for special populations (e.g. teen parenting, grand-parenting, incarcerated parenting, etc.), partnership classes with Seattle Public Schools, and online classes.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Under the general direction of the Dean for Applied Behavioral Science, the instructor will:
 
  • Provide instruction as assigned in Parent Education to students in our affiliated parent cooperative preschools, in the Parent/Child Center located at Seattle Vocational Institute, in childcare and other community settings, and online.
  • Develop classes related to family life and children (range of ages can include from birth to age eighteen). Age range depends on the specific assignment since ranges vary with cooperative site, child care program or other classes.
  • Fulfill professional obligations in accordance with the Seattle Colleges District/AFT-Seattle Agreement.
  • Class hours vary depending on the assignments; typically 33 hours/quarter (contact time) for each class section (most of the co-op sections cover 2 classes), including day and evening time commitments.
 

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & ABILITIES:

  • Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood, Parent Education, or related field.
  • Experience and skills in teaching adults.
  • Experience and skills in observing and interacting with infants and preschoolers in a group setting.
  • Experience and skills in working with adults and their children together in a group setting.
  • Experience and skills in supporting adults in learning to be members of a group.
